While listening to Shawn Achor’s book, the Happiness Advantage I learned that when we become happier it can effect up to 1,000 people – that is three degrees of separation – our friends, our friend’s friends and our friend’s friend’s friends. Since I have taught Happiness 101 to at least 100 people, potentially I have brightened the lives of over 100,000 people! And people wonder why I don’t charge for the class! Honestly! What more reward could one possibly ask for? Today I am grateful for the contagious nature of Happiness.

This is in my arsenal of coping skills. Whenever I am blue (and yes this does happen) my wife tells me the Big Mouthed Frog Joke. I love telling it. I love hearing it and it is wonderful to have a… joke that is sure to turn my disposition around. I fished around on YouTube and this is the best version I found. I hope you enjoy it and if you have any (clean) jokes you’d like to share, please do. Laughter is good for the soul and an important ingredient of Happiness.

While I don’t personally carry one, I appreciate that they give women an opportunity to show off their fashion sense. It also gives them somewhere to put, keys, ID, lipstick and seemingly everything in the known universe. I swear if Superman went up against a woman carrying a purse, he would probably flee for his life because he’d be absolutely sure kyrptonite is in there somewhere. Oh! It can also serve as a weapon to fend of would-be attackers (thinking of Ruth Buzzi in Laugh In)

I played guitar all through high school but my guitar collected dust into last year when a friend got me back into it. (Re)Learning guitar in the 21st century is an amazing experience. YouTube provides many guitar tutorials and if that doesn’t get it, Ultimate-Guitar.com provides step-by-step in a number of different formats including lead, rhythm and bass. They also offer it in tab and music forms. Incredible. Today I express thanks to Ultimate-guitar.com for rekindling my passion for guitar – all for free!

Once sugar was harder to get and more expensive. Now it is plentiful and sweetens my life and a daily basis. Out of respect for those on a diet I will refrain from listing all the goodies but would like to say that if my coffee were blond but not sweet, the relationship would probably end. 😉

Got the sprinkler system up and running. Only had to fix one sprinkler head and that only took 5 minutes. It was also really nice that my wife volunteered to help. It made us feel closer, like a team – and that also reduced the time and trouble. Today I am thankful the sprinklers are working.

I am grateful for having more than enough applicants for the June semester of Happiness 101. Without going into detail, this simplifies my life and gives me more time for fun!

I watched The Switch the other night and there was a scene where a man was lovingly picking lice from a child’s hair. It brought back a very fond memory of my brother who had caught lice by sharing a BMX helmet. He had very long hair and did not want to cut it. So, every night I spent the evening picking lice from his hair. Before that, we rarely just sat down and spent time together. When I think back, those hours we spent together were some of the most bonding moments. After all, it’s easy to say “I love you” but when someone is willing to pick lice from your hair, it shows they really care.
